Botulinum and Tissue Fillers

Lines and wrinkles on the face are the result of several factors, including sun damage, heredity, repetitive muscle use and facial expression, and reduced volumes of fat, collagen and elastic tissue that occur with age.

The appearance of facial wrinkles can be minimized by the use of botulinum toxin injections to decrease muscle contraction and the injection of superficial and deep tissue fillers.

Botulinum Toxin (Botox)

How does botulinum toxin work?

Botulinum toxin is the only product of its kind that is directed at the facial muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. It targets what are known as dynamic wrinkles, which are caused by repeated muscular contractions, such as frowning and squinting. Botulinum toxin, an injectable treatment derived from a purified protein, works by relaxing the muscles that cause these dynamic wrinkles, giving your face a more relaxed and refreshed appearance. In addition, treatment is so quick and easy that you can often have it done over lunch.

Where can botulinum toxin be used?

Treatment areas where botulinum toxin can be used include the frown lines between the eyebrows, the horizontal lines that run across the forehead, and the crow's feet around the outer eyes.

Are botulinum toxin treatments safe?

Botulinum toxin has been licensed in Canada since 1990 as a safe and effective treatment for a variety of medical conditions. In 2001, Health Canada approved botulinum toxin injections for wrinkle therapy.

What is the botulinum toxin treatment like?

A tiny amount of botulinum toxin is injected very precisely into the muscle being treated. A very fine needle and a small amount of liquid is used so the pain associated with the injection is minimal. The sensation has been compared to a bug bite. No sedation or local anesthetic is required, and you can resume normal activities immediately.

How long does a treatment take?

A botulinum toxin procedure is quick, simple, and there's no downtime. Following a facial analysis by one of our physicians and a discussion on your desired outcome, the procedure itself only takes about 10 to 15 minutes to perform.

How soon will I see a difference and how long does the treatment last?

You can expect to see results within days after your treatment. The appearance of wrinkles and lines may continue to diminish for up to one week. The effects usually last up to four months. After repeat treatments, the effects may begin to last longer.

Will my face still have expression?

Botulinum toxin injections are intended to enhance the way you look, not change it. When administered by an experienced physician, you can still smile, frown, and be expressive. The treatment only relaxes the muscle beneath the lines at the point of injection, so the other elements of your facial expression remain active. It also has no effect on the sensory nerves, so you will have normal feeling in the treated areas.

Tissue Fillers

What are tissue fillers and how do they work?

The Dermatologists at Atlantic Skin Care have extensive training and experience in the injection of hyaluronic acid based fillers including Belotero and Teosyal. This is a naturally-occurring substance which, when injected into skin lines around the nose and mouth, softens and smooths them for up to one year.

Redensity 1 and 2 are injectable combinations of hyaluronic acid and skin restructuring molecules, specially formulated to address dark circles under the eyes and fine lines on the entire face.

For deeper lines, and to restore volume in areas such as the temples, cheeks, “tear troughs,” nasolabial folds and marionette lines, we use Sculptra, a product made from poly-L-lactic acid, that stimulates the skin to produce its own collagen. Injected in a series of 3 treatment sessions over a 3 month period, results can last up to 2 years.

Treatment sessions for tissue fillers usually last approximately 30 minutes. Some swelling and bruising may occur for several days afterward; makeup can be applied immediately.
